Biography

Alexander Steeves is a third-year PhD student in Biomedical Engineering at the Faculty of Engineering.

Under the supervision of Dr. Fabio Variola, he is striving to capitalize on his experience in cell biology, microscopy and biomaterials to study the biophysical dynamics surrounding the healing of tissues in the uterus. The passion behind this work is to contribute to the field of Women's health research with the overarching goal of increasing the chances of a successful pregnancy for women who have experienced intrauterine trauma.

In addition to the Board of Governors, Alexander further advocates for graduate students through his work with the Graduate Student’s Association des étudiant.es diplômé.es (GSAÉD), where he acts as the organization's representative on the Senate Council on Graduate Studies, the Mental Health representative and on the Board as the Director for Biomedical and Mechanical Engineering. While as a Director, he continues to serve on the Not-for-Profit Act Transition Task Force, By-law, Finance, Health Insurance and the Oversight and Advisory committees.

Previously, Alexander has volunteered with the University of Ottawa Mechanical Engineering Graduate Association (President, Treasurer), the Engineering Faculty Council (Mechanical Engineering Graduate Representative), Let's Talk Science (Team Leader, Outreach Volunteer) and the Canadian Biomaterials Society, Ottawa Student Chapter (President, Treasurer).

Prior to entering his PhD, and in an attempt to lay the groundwork for an institutional trifecta, Alexander completed both his MASc in Biomedical Engineering (Faculty of Engineering) and BSc (Hons) in Physiology (Faculty of Medicine) at the University of Ottawa.
