Biography

Hannan Mohamud 2L law student at the English Common law faculty. Prior to joining the faculty, Hannan is an award-winning policy and legal researcher with a successful track record in citizen engagement and mobilization.

Hannan has advised political parties and consulted organizations for policy to include an intersectional and critical race analysis on a freelance basis. Her advocacy has been recognized across Canada, and she is called to speak and present her research at conferences and on behalf of non-profit organizations. Currently, Hannan works with the Canadian human rights commissioner’s office and as an independent researcher for grants she has successfully received to conduct legislation revision. Hannan volunteers with organizations such as the Canadian Council of Muslim Women and REACH Edmonton in her free time.   

By using policy to create multifaceted solutions to address social issues through meaningful collaboration with citizens, decision-makers and political institutions, Hannan has been successfully recognized and awarded one of the Top 30 Under 30 Awards by the Alberta Council for Global Cooperation (ACGC). This award features 30 outstanding young people, nominated by their community and selected by a committee of peers for their commendable work in making the world a more just, fair, and sustainable place for all.  

As an undergraduate student at the University of Alberta 2019, Hannan studied a dual BA in Psychology and Sociology; her research explored the importance of understanding the impacts of historical and contemporary oppression and trauma on policy development and decision-making.
