The ceremony is held earlier than most convocation ceremonies to allow Indigenous graduates to return to their communities after their examinations. To accommodate as many Indigenous graduates as possible, the event is held in late April to early May, following the end of final exams.

The ceremony is held at a different location every year in Ottawa.

The event is completely free of charge for graduates and their guests!

Indigenous students who are registered with the Indigenous Resource Centre (IRC) will be notified about the event near the end of the academic year. They can then register online, using the link emailed to their @uOttawa.ca account. They also need to indicate how many guests will be accompanying them when registering.

Unlike a typical convocation at a large postsecondary institution, there is no limit as to the number of guests you may bring with you. You will, however, need to confirm the number of guests attending the ceremony when you register online.

Absolutely not! You can attend both ceremonies if you wish. The Indigenous Graduate Honouring Ceremony, which celebrates the achievements of Indigenous students in the Ottawa area, is offered as a cultural alternative to the typical postsecondary convocation ceremony.

The University of Ottawa’s convocation ceremonies are typically held in June, which means there will be no scheduling conflict if you would like to register for both events.

Policy on traditional Indigenous attire at the convocation ceremonies

Students of Indigenous backgrounds who wish to wear traditional ceremonial attire in the place of an academic gown and hood are permitted to do so without requiring permission from their faculties.
