"DJT is a criminal, a seditionist and a liar. He sought to overturn the outcome of the 2020 election and almost succeeded. Exposing and punishing his crimes is one of the main ways to prevent a repeat of the January 2021 coup attempt. The next attempt will be more effective and may well succeed.”

“As a historian of the United States, I am struck by the parallels between the Watergate scandal and the attempted coup of January 6, 2021.

On the face of it, one of the laws that DJT broke, the one that justifies the search and seizure of documents, is the Presidential Records Act of 1978. This law was passed in response to the Watergate scandal when President Nixon and his advisors attempted to destroy incriminating documents.

As a historian, the delinquency of the 45th president reminds me of the importance of records and archives, both in the workings of government and in the work of historians; once again historians have archivists to thank!

In a broader sense, on a second level, these events again show the consequences of Watergate, and the presidency of Richard M. Nixon, in the current political landscape. Several other links exist between Nixon and DJT... The cheating, the "dirty tricks" employed by Nixon and his team from 1969 on, are for me inspired by the same anti-communist tactics as those of McCarthy."
