CCERBAL Conference: See you in April 2021!

The 2020 CCERBAL Conference, postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic, was rescheduled for April 29 - May 1, 2021. The theme of the conference, Bilingualism and Beyond: Advancing the Thinking on Pedagogies, Policies and Practices, and the plenary speakers will remain. The conference is planned to be presented in virtual mode. However,  if public health authorities permit larger gatherings, then a hybrid conference hosting both in-person participants and online participants may be offered. SSHRC Partnership Engage Grant Supports French-speaking Immigrants Integration Project

Congratulations to uOttawa professors Luisa Veronis (Geography) and Monika Jezak (OLBI), recipients of a SSHRC Partnership Engage Grant . The project entitled “Insertion professionnelle des enseignants de français langue seconde issus de l'immigration francophone : évaluation des besoins et élaboration d'outils d'accompagnement” will be carried out in collaboration with Alliance pour une Communauté Éducative Inclusive. It aims to support the professional integration of French as a second language teachers from Francophone immigration who work in English school boards in Ontario.

CCERBAL Forum – December 10, 2020

The next CCERBAL forum "The need for evidence-based strategies to navigate the changed linguistic landscapes in education" by Emmanuelle Le Pichon-Vorstman of the University of Toronto will take place on Thursday, December 10 at noon. The bilingual presentation will be offered in virtual mode. Digitalizing Language: Vocabulary on Distance Teaching and Telework

The COVID-19 pandemic has disrupted our lives, the world of work and education. Telework is now part of the routine. With all this upheaval, new terms have also emerged. Terminologists from the Translation Bureau of the Government of Canada and the Office québécois de la langue française have collaborated on the development of the new Vocabulary on distance teaching and telework. The Vocabulary presents the bilingual terminology of 80 concepts in these fields to help us, for example, untangle the differences between similar-looking terms such as "telework" and "working from home". This useful tool aids to better grasp the terminology in these domains and pinpoint the right word.

I LOBify: Now Featuring ESL!

In September, OLBI launched ILOBify, an application that serves as a repertoire of linguistic tools that help to maintain, improve and perfect second language skills. The application was developed in response to the distance-learning challenge brought forth by the pandemic. Since its release, more than 200 users have taken advantage of ILOBify’s ample resources — namely podcasts, workshops, books, articles, feature-length films, music and much more. Initially introduced with resources for French as a second language (FSL), the application now offers a wide array of English as a second language (ESL) resources as well. Check out  ILOBify’s new features and enjoy second language learning from the palm of your hand!

Please note that, following the application’s update, users might have to redownload ILOBify on their hand-held device or sign in via their preferred browser.
