Programs and courses

Discover the Official Languages and Bilingualism Institute's (OLBI) wide variety of undergraduate and graduate options to earn a university degree in Second Language Teaching, Bilingualism Studies, or sign up for credit courses to develop your French and English language skills for the workforce.

OLBI also offers non credit courses to develop language skills you need to access University-level courses, and language training for uOttawa employees, at any level of proficiency.

Undergraduate programs

Learn French

From intermediate-level to advanced-level students in French as a second or a foreign language, add a Minor or a Major to your undergraduate degree.

Or complete a Microprogram, regardless of your level of French, at anytime during your degree.

Learn English

From intermediate-level to advanced-level students in English as a second or a foreign language, add a Minor or a Major to your undergraduate degree.

Or complete a Microprogram, regardless of your level of English, at anytime during your degree.

Teach French

Best training preparing to teach to adult learners as well as elementary and high school students. Graduates of this program may qualify for one of 40 spots reserved at the Faculty of Education in Teacher Education or Formation à l’enseignement.

Master of Arts in Bilingualism Studies

The Official Languages and Bilingualism Institute (OLBI) is offering a program leading to the Master of Arts (MA) in Bilingualism Studies. This program is intended to offer an advanced education in several areas of applied linguistics, including bilingualism and multilingualism, methodological and technological innovations in adult second language instruction, assessment of adult second language competence, as well as language policy and planning.

The program is offered in English and French. Students are required to take one of their two compulsory courses in English and the other in French. The electives can be taken in either language.

Microprogram

Want to further customize your degree?

Complete a Microprogram by taking any 4 French or English courses. Acquire knowledge and develop skills for fewer course units than a Major or an Honours program.

Students already admitted to a University of Ottawa program may add the Microprogram to their program of study through the online tool. It will contribute to the degree requirements at the elective course level.
Individuals interested in the Microprogram who are not previously admitted to earn a University of Ottawa degree must apply for registration as a special student.

Credit courses

Enrolling in English and French second language courses

Courses in English as a Second Language (ESL) and French as a Second Language (FLS, Français langue seconde) are meant to help you improve your language skills. The courses are offered from a beginner level to an advanced level.

Second language certification

Have your abilities in English or French formally recognized. This certificate will be a definite asset when entering the job market.

Build your confidence and acquire the language skills you need to access University-level courses and programs. The English Intensive Program (EIP) is designed to bridge your academic abilities and intercultural knowledge to prepare for an undergraduate or graduate program.

French intensive program

Language courses for uOttawa employees

Free language training in French and in English for University of Ottawa employees, including administrative staff and professors. Some courses are also open to their family members.

French and English immersion

Many students feel that improving their French or their English is important in order to succeed in their studies and benefit from new career and training opportunities. The Official Languages and Bilingualism Institution (OLBI) supports French and English Immersion courses for intermediate level eligible students who wish to increase their linguistic abilities in an academic setting!
