Jamie Benidickson

Jamie Benidickson enseigne le droit canadien et international de l'environnement, le droit de l'eau, le droit du développement durable et l'histoire du droit canadien. Ses publications dans ces domaines comprennent Environmental Law 5th (Irwin Law, 2019) et The Culture of Flushing : A Social and Legal History of Sewage (UBC Press, 2007), retenu en 2008 pour le prix Harold Adams Innis.

En plus de ces intérêts académiques, Jamie a été activement impliqué dans le processus de politique publique par son travail avec un certain nombre de commissions royales et d'enquêtes, y compris la Commission royale sur l'union économique et les perspectives de développement du Canada et l'enquête Walkerton. Il a également occupé plusieurs postes administratifs au sein d'organisations professionnelles et universitaires et a récemment été directeur de l'Académie de l'environnement de l'UICN Law.

Ses projets de recherche en cours portent sur les régimes de gouvernance des bassins versants, la biodiversité et le développement durable au Canada et la réglementation de la bière et des brasseries. Expérience et recherche en matière de politique publique

• L'expérience de Jamie Benidickson en matière d'enquêtes et de politiques publiques a commencé en 1973 lorsqu'il a travaillé comme assistant de recherche pour le professeur T.H.B. Symons sur un rapport pour l'Association des universités et collèges du Canada, To Know Ourselves : Rapport sur les études canadiennes. Il a ensuite été adjoint spécial du président (l'honorable Donald S. Macdonald) et coordonnateur des politiques en matière de fédéralisme et d'institutions auprès de la Commission royale sur l'union économique et les perspectives de développement du Canada, puis il a aidé le juge Willard Z. Estey dans le cadre de son enquête sur l'effondrement de la BCC et des banques Northland.
• Les autres recherches de Jamie en matière de politique comprennent la co-écriture avec J.R.S. Prichard d'un article intitulé "Securing the Canadian Economic Union : Federalism and Internal Barriers to Trade" dans M.J. Trebilcock et al eds. Federalism and the Canadian Economic Union, (University of Toronto Press for the Ontario Economic Council, 1983). Il a ensuite travaillé pour Dean Prichard à l'Enquête fédérale-provinciale-territoriale sur la responsabilité et l'indemnisation en matière de soins de santé.
• Parmi ses autres recherches sur les politiques, mentionnons une étude de fond sur l'histoire des commissions royales et des enquêtes pour le projet d'enquêtes publiques de la Commission de réforme du droit de l'Ontario (Kent Roach, directeur de la recherche). Plus récemment, il a rédigé un document de fond pour l'enquête de Walkerton sur l'infrastructure d'approvisionnement en eau et d'évacuation des eaux usées en Ontario, 1880-1990 : Legal and Institutional Aspects of Public Health and Environmental History, (Toronto, 2002).
• Expérience administrative
• Jamie Benidickson a acquis une série d'expériences administratives au sein d'organisations universitaires, professionnelles et bénévoles. Il a été le premier directeur exécutif du Conseil des doyens et doyennes des facultés de droit du Canada, puis a occupé le même poste au sein du Conseil des tribunaux administratifs canadiens. De 1994 à 1997, il a été vice-doyen de la Section de common law de la Faculté de droit de l'Université d'Ottawa, où il a ensuite été vice-doyen à la recherche.
• Jamie a été directeur exécutif de l'Académie de l'UICN pour l'environnement Lawnorth_eastlien externe de 2004 à 2008 et de 2010 à 2016.

• Un enthousiasme personnel pour le canoë en tant que loisir et passe-temps récréatif s'est transformé au fil du temps en un intérêt pour la recherche et l'écriture. L'expérience Temagami : Recreation, Resources and Aboriginal Rights in the Northern Ontario Wilderness avec Bruce Hodgins (University of Toronto Press, 1989) est né d'une idée sur les rives du lac Temagami. Idleness, Water and A Canoe : Reflections on Paddling for Pleasure (University of Toronto Press, 1997) est une histoire sociale du canotage récréatif. Le livre traite des valeurs sociales, culturelles et environnementales du canotage telles qu'elles ont été exprimées principalement par des pagayeurs du Canada et des États-Unis depuis environ cent cinquante ans. Un essai ultérieur, "Pierre Elliott Trudeau : Why He Paddled" a été publié dans Kanawa, automne 2001, 54-59.
• Entre 1989 et 1993, Jamie a été président du Musée canadien du canoë et fait toujours partie du conseil consultatif du musée.
