Concentration

This Master of Education (MEd) program focusing on Second Language Education will allow you to expand your knowledge of theory, concepts and practices related to language teaching and learning.

In this program, you will examine the political, cultural, social and technological issues associated with education and languages ​​at a provincial, national and international level. The program allows you to understand what it means to learn a second language, ie a language of schooling. You cover everything related to the pedagogy and didactics of second languages. You will learn about the theoretical models on this subject and about the progress of research. Thus, you will be able to develop pedagogical practices that better meet the needs of learners and raise students' awareness of issues in a minority context.

About the concentration

This concentration is offered within the following degree options:

Professional program:

  • Master of Education (MEd), online option (12 months full-time or 24 - 48 months in part-time)

The program can lead to doctoral studies and a career in research:

  • Master of Education (MEd), online option, major research paper (20 months full-time or 24 - 48 months in part-time)

Since May 2021, this concentration is no longer offered for the Master of arts in Education (MA) and for the Doctorate in Philosophy in Education (PhD). If you want to apply in one of these programs, you will be following the proposed general path with a research topic related to the subject area.

Course sequences

MEd, Online, Concentration in Second Language Education

This program includes a total of 10 courses (30 units), of which at least 5 courses (15 units) within the field and 3 elective courses in any Education course at the graduate level (9 units)1. Here are the Program Requirements and Course Descriptions.

Term 1
Fall
  • EDU 5190 Introduction to Research in Education (3 units)
  • 2 courses in the concentration (6 units)
  • 1 optional course in Education (EDU) at the graduate level (3 units)
Term 2
Winter
  • 3 courses in the concentration (9 units)
  • 1 optional course in Education (EDU) at the graduate level (3 units)
Term 3
Spring/Summer
  • EDU 5199 Synthesis Seminar (3 units)
  • 1 optional course in Education (EDU) at the graduate level (3 units)

Notes

  1. EDU 5190 must be completed in the first or second term in which it is offered following admission. 
  2. EDU 5199 must be completed in the last term of your program.

Important

  • Compulsory courses must be taken in the language of your program of study.
  • If you are full-time, you should take 3 to 4 courses per term (as indicated in the sequence above) however, as a part-time student you may not take more than 2 courses each term.
  • Courses are 3 hours long and require about 6 to 9 hours of study per week of your own time.
  • Most courses are offered in the evening so you are responsible for ensuring that you can attend the course in question, to complete the requirements of your program.
