“The biggest challenge of being abroad is also its biggest reward: experiencing a new culture and opening your mind to a new language, a new way of doing things and most importantly to new people.”

Research abroad

The International Research and Experiential Learning (IREX) office offers a variety of programs for students and professors that support international collaboration.

Students are also encouraged to discuss with their research supervisor regarding opportunities for doing research abroad. Your supervisor will potentially have an international network in their field of research and could help you find an opportunity to work with a research lab or group abroad.

Student testimonial

“I had the opportunity to study at the University of Manchester in the United Kingdom. I chose this university because of its strong aerospace research, which I could not find at uOttawa. There, I was able to work on a research project involving the excavation of regolith on the moon. I designed a four-wheeled rover to test the various excavation instruments. This experience kick-started my career as it allowed me to intern at industry-leading companies back in Canada.”

Please note that students in a non-thesis master program at the Faculty of Engineering who are not registered in the CO-OP program may be eligible to take an Industry Internship course, allowing them to complete a credited internship related to their program of study. International placements may be permitted. For more information, contact the Faculty’s Graduate Studies Office at [email protected].
