University of Ottawa-Carleton University exchange program

If you are a University of Ottawa student enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate program and would like to take courses at Carleton University, you can do so through the exchange agreement with Carleton University. You must follow these instructions and fill out the application form below.

The exchange program

What is the exchange program?

The University of Ottawa-Carleton University exchange program is a credit transfer program that allows University of Ottawa students to take courses at Carleton University and vice-versa. Unlike with courses you take at another university through a letter of permission, you receive a letter grade for courses completed at Carleton, which counts towards your cumulative grade point average (CGPA).

Who is eligible?

These eligibility criteria are for undergraduate students. Eligibility criteria for graduate students may vary.

To be eligible for the Carleton University exchange program, you must meet the following criteria:

  • Be admitted to a program of studies at the University of Ottawa
  • Be enrolled at the University of Ottawa for the term during which the exchange will occur
  • Be in good academic standing
  • Have your faculty’s or school’s approval

In addition, you can only register for a course at Carleton University if

  • this course is mandatory for your program and it meets University of Ottawa degree requirements
  • this course is not available at the University of Ottawa and taking the course at Carleton would allow you to complete your program requirements during the current academic year
  • an equivalent course is not available at the University of Ottawa during the same academic year or the course is full
  • you have passed any prerequisite courses

Courses completed at Carleton University do not count towards residence requirements (see regulation B - 8.6) at the University of Ottawa. In addition, you cannot request to audit undergraduate courses through the exchange agreement.

Carleton email and computing account

Once registered in one or more unit (credit) courses at Carleton University, you will be issued a Student Computing Account and get access to Carleton Central. This account will enable you to participate in My Carleton course discussion groups, read email, and access Brightspace and personal and campus announcements. Once your Carleton email is activated, you must use it for all correspondence.

Grades

You can view your final grades online through Carleton Central under Student Records and Registration – myGrades. The Registrar’s Office at Carleton University will automatically forward grades for courses you take at Carleton to the Office of the Registrar at the University of Ottawa.

Grades received for courses completed at Carleton are converted according to the equivalency table found in Academic Regulation B-5 (see section 5.2). These grades also appear on official transcripts and are included in CGPA calculations.

Deadlines

You can register for the exchange program each term according to the Carleton University registration dates. We recommend you submit your form in advance of these dates to have your evaluation completed before registration starts.

Fees

University of Ottawa students can take courses at Carleton University without paying additional tuition fees. However, you must pay the ancillary fees (e.g., for field trips, learning materials) related to these courses, if applicable, prior to the Carleton payment deadline. Be sure to check your financial account in Carleton Central.

For more, see the Carleton Student Accounts Receivable unit.

Exams

You can check your exam schedule online through Carleton Central. Check your exam schedules at both Carleton and the University of Ottawa as soon as they’re available to avoid problems with exam conflicts. If you have conflicts, email your faculty or school.

How to register for a course at Carleton

  1. Make sure there are no conflicts with your University of Ottawa courses.

Check the Carleton University class schedule to know when the Carleton course is offered. Then, before your first class, check your timetable online through Carleton Central to be sure that you have the most up to date information about your course.

  2. Complete and submit the application form below.

When you submit the form, it will automatically go to your faculty for review. If your request is accepted, your faculty will sign the form and return it to you via your @uOttawa.ca email address. Allow 20 business days for this review to take place. Note that approval does not guarantee access to a course.

  3. Get approval from Carleton University.

Once you have your form signed by your faculty or school, you must get it approved by the registrar’s office at Carleton. To do so, using your @uOttawa.ca email, send your form to [email protected] (if you are an undergraduate student) or to [email protected] (if you are a graduate student).

We also recommend you send an unofficial copy of your transcript at this time as most departments will require it to prove you have the prerequisites. To obtain a copy, log into uoZone and under the Applications tab, select Unofficial transcript. Carleton may also ask you to meet other registration requirements.

If your registration is approved, Carleton will sign your form and send it back to you.

  4. Send your signed form to your faculty office.

Once you get your form signed by Carleton University, email it to your faculty office to finalize your registration. You must do this by the Carleton registration deadlines. At this point, you must also pay the required fees.

If you wish to add another course for the same term once you’ve submitted the original request, just fill out another application form and repeat steps 3 and 4.

Course withdrawal or cancellation of registration

To withdraw from a course or cancel your registration at Carleton, fill out the application form. In the “Courses” section, under “Type of request,” select “Course(s) drop” and enter the course information. The form is then sent to your faculty or school automatically which sends it back to you. Once you receive it, email it to Carleton University by the Carleton registration deadlines, not those at uOttawa:
