The University of Ottawa’s Common Law Section appreciates the effectiveness of experiential learning in improving students’ law school performance, creating networks within the profession and gaining new and different perspectives on legal issues.

We offer over 400 experiential learning opportunities every year including legal clinics, volunteer placements, moot competitions, Pro Bono Students Canada, internships, mentorship programs and fellowships in which students can take part during their studies in law.

Our faculty’s clinical placements, internships, followships and volunteer opportunities empower students to have a direct and significant impact in their communities, across the country and around the world. Our experiential learning opportunities allow our students to work on the most pressing legal issues of our time, such as social inequality, climate change, reconciliation with Indigenous Peoples and artificial intelligence.

Choose your own adventure

With over nearly five hundred clinical placements, internships, followships and volunteer opportunities offered at the faculty, students can choose a hands on learning experiences that are tailored to their personal interests, values and career goals. These include:

  • Clinics: law students work with members of the legal profession or law professors to provide information, advice, and other assistance to clients while gaining practical experience. Our clinics include:
  • Internships: law student gain practical experience and exposure to different areas of the law by working in a variety of legal environments
  • Volunteer opportunities: law students volunteer in their communities to provide valuable pro bono legal services and access to justice to underrepresented and disadvantaged individuals, groups, and organizations.
  • Moots: law students are coached by seasoned experts in their fields to develop their writing and oral advocacy skills while taking part in an intensive legal competition
