The Reedsy Creative Writing Scholarship is a biannual award for writers and novelists in further education. The Law Society’s Indigenous Law Student Scholarship supports Indigenous law students who are pursuing a Juris Doctor degree, a Master of Laws degree, or a Ph.D. in law. It also promotes legal research and scholarly work related to Indigenous legal orders, language, history, traditions, and culture.

Up to three scholarships in the amount of $5,000 will be awarded annually to candidates chosen through a selection process developed by the Law Society’s Indigenous Education Action Committee. Each of the successful scholarship recipients will have their picture and biography featured on the Law Society’s website.

The Insolvency Institute of Canada 2023-2024 Law Student Writing Awards program is now open.

First, second and third prizes of $7,500, $5,000 and $2,500 will be awarded, and students from the fall or winter term can submit papers at any time, until the June 14, 2024 deadline.

In addition, both the faculty sponsor and the first-place award winner will be invited guests at the IIC’s annual conference being held September 26-29, 2024 in Scottsdale, Arizona. This includes accommodation, meals and travel costs. If a co-authored paper is judged a winner, the division of the prize and the reimbursed travel costs for the first place winner will be entirely at the discretion of the winners.

The NEADS National Student Awards Program is offered to encourage full access to postsecondary education for persons with disabilities, who often have higher costs and greater barriers to participation in higher education.

Scholarships available for up to five Indigenous law school students of $2,500 for the following academic year.  Successful applicants will be given free CCLA student memberships. The awards will be announced at the CCLA Awards Gala on June 15, 2023, at the Awards Gala, and Justice O'Bonsawin will be present as part of the ceremony and the students will meet her and other members of our association.

The Society of Ontario Adjudicators and Regulators is pleased to award an annual academic scholarship. To promote interest in and recognize dedication to the principles of administrative law, SOAR will award  $5,000 in scholarship money to one (in exceptional circumstances, two)  upper level (L2 or L3) student(s) who demonstrates a commitment to the administrative justice system.  Students must show, in a written essay, how their studies have led them (or will lead them) to embrace the practice of administrative law.

In its deliberations, SOAR will consider the principles of equity, diversity and inclusion in the legal profession. Applications are accepted no later than July 31 of each calendar year.  The award will be presented at SOAR’s annual general meeting (December of the same year). Overview

Gowling WLG is committed to supporting the next generation of legal leaders in the life sciences sector. Our firm's $5,000 Life Sciences, Society and the Law student scholarship was created to do just that.

A companion to Gowling WLG's annual "Life Sciences, Society and the Law Symposium," the scholarship is awarded each year to the law student who writes the most distinguished paper exploring the evolving relationship between the life sciences and society from a legal perspective.

The winning paper will be decided by a panel of judges and will be announced at the BIO International Convention in San Diego on June 3, 2024. In addition to the $5,000 financial package, the author of the winning paper will be invited to participate in our symposium and recognized across Gowling WLG’s various channels.

Gowling WLG gratefully acknowledges the leadership and generous funding contribution from Bayer Inc., both of which made this scholarship possible. The firm will be working closely with Bayer to promote broader interest in life sciences and highlight the opportunities for law students who are interested in pursuing a career in the sector.

Artificial intelligence (AI) is increasingly influential in drug discovery and therapeutic development, and its impact is only expected to dramatically increase. This raises important questions about the ownership of inventions, the future of the “patent bargain,” and what it means to be an inventor deserving of the fruits of their labour that may be asserted against others. Can Canadian patent law absorb this new paradigm or are fundamental changes necessary?

Discuss whether IP laws should be revised and how they should be modified to effectively address the emergence of AI-driven “inventions” and their impact on the patent system.

Irwin Law Inc., publisher of the Canadian Class Action Review, is pleased to announce the Harvey T. Strosberg Essay Prize for the best student essay on class actions.

Deadline: May 21, 2024

Eligibility: All Canadian university students enrolled in undergraduate, graduate, or professional programs are eligible to submit an essay on any aspect of class actions, including the law, accounting, computer science, management, public relations, and financing issues. The $10,000 prize is awarded annually. This year, essays must be submitted by May 21, 2024. The winner will be announced in the autumn, and the winning paper will be published in an upcoming issue of the Canadian Class Action Review. By submitting a paper for this competition, the author consents to publication in the CCAR in print and/or electronic form. A national prize board, composed of a panel of distinguished lawyers and judges, has been established to review the submissions and to choose the prizewinner.

We especially welcome submissions by students who are Black, Indigenous, LGBTQIA2S+, or living with disability, and People of Colour or members of other racialized and marginalized groups, as well as all submissions that address class actions in the context of equity and inclusion. A key tenet of class actions is providing access to justice to people who might otherwise be denied it within our current social and legal systems, and we welcome essays that discuss these important issues.

Please note: All essay submissions must be typed and be between 8,000 and 15,000 words. Please use the (McGill) Canadian Guide to Uniform Legal Citation, 9th edition, and the Canadian Oxford Dictionary. We also ask that you submit a short abstract of no more than 250 words with your paper. If you are submitting a paper in French, please provide an English abstract. Co-authored papers will be accepted. However, if a co-authored paper does win the competition, the $10,000 prize will be split among all authors. Only one paper may be submitted by each student.
