Biography

Mr. Baril graduated magna cum laude from the University of Ottawa Faculty of Law. He articled with Gowlings and was called to the Ontario Bar in 1998. His practice is focused on litigation and competition law including class actions. He has appeared before all levels of the Ontario Court of Justice, the Federal court and a number of federal and provincial administrative tribunals. Mr. Baril has also acted in arbitrations before the International Chamber of Commerce. In 2003 and 2004, Mr. Baril took leave from Gowlings and worked for a large U.S. firm based in Washington D.C. where he practised trade litigation (Customs, antidumping and countervailing) before Canadian and American authorities. He returned to Gowlings in the fall of 2004.

Mr. Baril was an instructor at the Law Society of Upper Canada Bar Admission Course for several years. He is a part-time professor at the University of Ottawa where he teaches competition law and lectures on trial advocacy. Mr. Baril sits on the Steering Committee of the Eastern Ottawa Francophone Legal Aid Clinic and on the Board of the Vanier Community Service Centre.

Mr. Baril practices in both official languages and is a member of Association des juristes d'expression française de l'Ontario (AJEFO), the Canadian Bar Association, the Advocates' Society and the County of Carleton Law Association.
