Biography

Bevin Cate Worton obtained her LLB from the University of Alberta in 2002 and her LLM specializing in labour and employment law from Osgoode in 2008. A member of the law societies of Alberta and Upper Canada, she worked for union-side labour law firms in both Alberta and Ontario, litigating and providing legal advice and training to clients. After leaving private practice in 2007, she worked for the Ontario Human Rights Commission before beginning to work for the Federal Government in 2008.

Bevin joined the Department of Justice’s Law Practice Management Division (previously the Dispute Prevention and Resolution Division) in 2009 where she provides legal and policy advice, as well as training, on all aspects of dispute prevention and resolution including negotiation, mediation and arbitration. She is particularly interested in the role of apologies in dispute resolution, as well as the use of online dispute resolution technology in administrative tribunals and the courts.

An experienced public speaker and adult educator, Bevin has facilitated panels and made presentations at Justice, national, and international conferences. She has developed and taught a number of classes to Justice employees and to client departments, primarily on dispute resolution topics but also on gender-based analysis, legal project management, and legal risk management. Since 2013, she has been teaching CML2321 Alternative Dispute Resolution Processes.
