Moots

If International Investment Law interests you, and you’re ready to work on a Moot this summer and fall, then throw in your hat to try out for uOttawa’s highly successful FDI Moot Team.

For the tenth time, uOttawa will participate in the Foreign Direct Investment International Arbitration Moot (FDI Moot).

Our team will be joint – combining Civil Law, Common Law (including National Program) and Programme de droit canadien (PDC) students (3 or 4 total).

The FDI Moot includes participants from all over the world and we plan to participate in person to the Global competition that will take place at King's College London, England, on 3-6 November 2022 (to be confirmed). The FDI Moot takes place in English, so students are expected to be fluent in this language.

If you are interested, please send an email to [email protected] and [email protected] by March 7, 2002 including a copy of your transcript and CV. We will then provide instructions to students who qualify for the try-outs that will take place on March 14-15, 2022. It will involve the presentation of a short argument based on the Moot problem and answering questions.

Requirements

Be interested in International Investment Law and International Arbitration (students who have taken relevant classes are strongly encouraged to apply). Having taken a Public International Law course (or equivalent) is a plus.
Be in good academic standing
Be available to perform most of the research in the Summer (since the Memorials are due in September 2022)
Be available for team meetings during the Summer (maybe once or twice a month as required)
Be fluent in English (which is the language of the Moot)
Be a full-time student in Civil Law, Common Law (incl. National Program) or PDC in the Fall of 2022 (students receive credit for the Moot in the Fall semester).

We will continue to run our world-class mooting program for 2021-22. At this time, not every moot competition has confirmed if their moot is in-person, or virtual. As we receive this information, we will update the list below.

Participating in a competitive moot can be one of the most rewarding experiences at law school. The Common Law Section offers a wide selection of moots covering different subject areas. While most moots test appellate advocacy skills, others require participants to demonstrate their abilities in trial, arbitration or other settings.

The moots in the upcoming 2021-2022 academic year are selected from the following list and will be announced during the moot information session. Budgetary restraints mean we may not participate in all of the listed moots every year: content is subject to change. Of note, you do not select a "moot course" during course selection. You must try out in September, and if you make it onto a team, in most cases, you must drop your January course.

The Tryout Problem for Fall 2021:

Final Appeal to the Fauteux Court of Canada:

You are to argue for or against how the Supreme Court of Canada’s majority decision analyzed the question of damages in C.M. Callow Inc. v. Zollinger, 2020 SCC 45.

Your argument should focus on paragraphs 105-120 of the decision.

You’ll have up to 7 minutes to argue your case. You should expect questions from the bench during your 7 minutes. Please take this into account.
