Student Esti Azizi awarded gold medal for her fresh take on wrongful convictions experiences

When Esti Azizi entered law school, she had an interest in criminal law, and specifically in criminal prosecution. “But my biggest fear was what if I enter this profession and contribute to a wrongful conviction," the now 3L said. “To me, it is such a horror to think that I could potentially contribute to a wrongful conviction. That fear encouraged me to learn more about the subject and how to prevent them.”

In a simulated meeting of the UN Security Council, virtually convened on 15 November 2021, Common Law students passed a resolution, making a series of recommendations to the international community to help the people of Afghanistan at the time of catastrophe. The unanimously passed SC resolution (S/RES/2606 (2021)) covers, inter alia, helping the people of Afghanistan, the role of the United Nations, the question of representation of Taliban in the United Nations, and the UN sanctions on Taliban.
- First Year Students Participate in 2021 Annual Nelligan Moot

The 14th edition of the annual Nelligan Law First Year Moot Court Competition was held on November 13-15, 2021. Over 140 first-year students in the English Program competed in the preliminary rounds, held on the morning of November 13. The 1L students were divided into hearings with two appellant counsel facing off against two respondent counsel. In a competition first, all hearings were held online, allowing 57 judges from across Canada and abroad (including one in London, England!) to judge.

On November 12, 2021, Mayor Jim Watson revealed this year’s inductees to the Order of Ottawa. Among the 15 names were two proud uOttawa Common Law alumni: Dr. Danielle Lussier, LLB ‘07, LLM ’08, Law PhD ’21 and Daljit S. Nirman, LLM ’02. This award recognizes exceptional residents who have made important contributions that benefit of the citizens of Ottawa. Mayor Watson calls the inductees “remarkable individuals who have gone above and beyond to improve the lives of those in our community through their professional accomplishments.”

The competition, endowed by Harley Finkelstein, joint J.D. & MBA, ‘09 and President of Shopify, was designed to develop the entrepreneurial mindset that is critical to leadership, helping students to become better leaders, lawyers, and entrepreneurs.

According to the organization, Linde has a particular interest in human rights law. "In addition to her Dean’s Honours List standing, Jennifer is involved in many extracurricular activities. Among other involvements, she serves as an Associate Editor of the Ottawa Law Review, Vice President Internal of the Regroupement étudiant de common law en français (her program’s student association), and as a part-time podcast host of The Law School Show where she aims to highlight the work of women in the legal profession. Jennifer is also involved in two mentorship programs through which she has four female law student “mentees” to whom she provides guidance, encouragement, and empowerment."

On November 16, a United Nations Security Council’s simulation with Common Law students representing Council members took place as part of Dr. Saeid Mirzaei Yengejeh’s Law of International Organizations course. The mock Security Council considered ways of combating the COVID-19 pandemic and unanimously passed a resolution calling for coordinated action to address the multidimensional aspects of this catastrophe.

Samantha Peters, JD ’16, is a proud alumna who lives law differently. Samantha has joined the Faculty of Law on a part-time basis for the 2020-2021 academic year as the Black Legal Mentor-in-Residence. In this role, Samantha will provide one-on-one and group academic and career mentorship to Black law students, and will provide expertise in the development of supportive programming and anti-racism initiatives.
