Are you interested in teaching for the Department of Family Medicine? We offer exciting opportunities at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels.

To teach medical students or residents, you must have a faculty appointment. The Faculty of Medicine appoints clinical faculty members who are responsible to both the university and the teaching site.

The level of appointment you hold (primary, cross or adjunct) depends on your involvement in the DFM. The Procedures Manual for Academic Appointments in the Faculty of Medicine outlines the application process for all appointment types.

There are two categories of appointment for clinical faculty members:

Full-Time Clinical Academic Appointment

The physician or clinical scientist (PhD) spends four full days or more per week in academic activities at the university, a research institution or a fully affiliated hospital, community-affiliated hospital or an affiliated community practice with a relationship with uOttawa. The Department Chair and the Dean must approve the activities.

Part-Time Clinical Academic Appointment

The physician or clinical scientist (PhD) spends between one and four days per week in academic activities at the university, a research institute, or a fully affiliated hospital, community-affiliated hospital or an affiliated community practice with a relationship with uOttawa. The Department Chair and the Dean must approve the activities.

Academic Appointment Ranks

Appointment to an academic rank is aimed at the component of clinician or researcher work that is specifically focused on furthering the University of Ottawa’s academic mission.

Promotion

Promotion within the University ranks is the single most important way in which the University can recognize the excellence of its faculty for their contributions to all facets of University life - teaching, research and scholarly work and other professional activities both within and outside the University. Criteria for promotion and procedures followed in the granting of promotion from one academic rank to the next, are covered by the collective agreement for regular full time faculty members and by the Standards & Procedures for Promotion of Clinical Faculty for faculty members who are not members of APUO.

Tenure, granted to regular full time faculty members, recognize the contribution of faculty members to these academic activities and their value to the University and gives a certain ‘job security’ that allows for the expression of academic freedom.

Tenure is generally only available to regular full time faculty members, covered by the collective agreement between the University and APUO. The criteria for tenure and the process of applying for and granting of tenure are governed by the collective agreement.
