This workshop is delivered to all unit-based and community preceptors. It includes a half-day introduction to teaching offered to new faculty.

The ETS program was developed to address preceptors’ desire and need to be better teachers and have more in-house faculty development. To date, three courses have been developed:

The Basics – Topics include:

Essential Teaching Skills 2

Supporting the Learner in Difficulty – Topics include:

• An Approach to Issue Identification

• Learning Objectives and Learning Strategies

• Basics of Documentation

Essential Teaching Skills 3

Teaching Professionalism – Topics include:

• Medical Professionalism

• Teaching Professionalism

• Evaluating Professionalism

• Remediating Professionalism

To help the postgraduate team distribute information about new topics in curriculum, evaluation and teaching, semi-annual road shows are organized to bring the information to the faculty. This ensures that all faculty members are able to participate in new learning initiatives.

We offer a number of lectures and workshops throughout the year. They include:

• Faculty Development Half Days;

• A Simulated Office Oral workshop for examiners;

• Retreats to meet the specific needs of the community and francophone units

Update on the Spring Faculty Development Day: A New Hope

On May 13th, faculty members from multi-sites gathered in-person for a Faculty Development Day: A New Hope. It was a successful and engaging day of teaching and learning comprised of five diverse sessions. The morning started with an ETS2 session, with Dr. Wooltorton, Dr. Tanner and Dr. Rifai facilitating a discussion on the Fundamentals of Supporting Struggling Learners.

A working lunch provided faculty the opportunity to meet members of the DFM CLIMB! Mentorship group, and share stories, discuss mentorship, and explore resources to help with challenges related to the CLIMB! domains (clinical care, leadership, investigation/research/scholarship, medical education, “Best self”).

Two invited speakers presented in the afternoon: Dr. Ballou, a family physician with Montfort, with 40+ years’ experience working with Indigenous patients and communities, shared his reflections on his practice and his insight acquired through his work with Indigenous patients; the second invited speaker, Sylvie Dagenais-Douville of the Institut du Rire in Montréal, led an interactive session through which faculty were shown – and experienced through exercises – the benefits of “Laughter Yoga” to patients and learners alike. Both presentations were inspiring and received excellent feedback from those in attendance.

The day was rounded out by a Mentoring for Scholarship session, which included break-out sessions with experienced faculty members who shared their insights on early career scholarship challenges and provided resources and practical advice on how to approach “sample” challenges facing residents and clinician teachers. Those who were unable to attend provided short video presentations of their tips for mentoring.  A special guest, Marcel D’Eon, attended virtually, from the Medical College of Georgia, Augusta University. His “presence” was made possible through a newly acquired “Sheldon-bot,” a self-contained, mobile AV unit. This aspect of this session speaks to the times we are living in, in which we are trying to bring people together from near and far, and include mobile, virtual participation. This is a continued enhancement of the DFM’s effort to include virtual participation in future events.

The Annual Faculty Retreat is an opportunity for our faculty members to enhance their skills as teachers and exchange ideas with colleagues.

The DFM encourages a dedication to lifelong learning. We support your efforts to learn and grow through offering Continuing Medical Education (CME) leave, as permitted in the clinical service context. Funding and leave for CME activities is a component of our partnership in the Family Medicine Associates of Ottawa. We organize Problem Based Learning groups and Lunch and Learn sessions within the teaching units. We also host regular journal clubs at the community unit.

Faculty Development recognizes the importance of scholarship in creating a robust department. The team boasts good relationships with research and the Faculty of Medicine. This ensures support to our faculty in their research, promotion or further education endeavours.

Through Faculty Development’s support, our DFM faculty have successfully published and presented both at the local and national levels. We expect this to continue with our commitment to helping you pursue your scholarly activities.

This one-credit-per-hour Group Learning program meets the certification criteria of the College of Family Physicians of Canada and has been certified by the University of Ottawa’s Office of Continuing Professional Development for up to 6.0 Mainpro+ credits.
