At the end of the program, you will have acquired the knowledge and skills to offer low risk obstetrical care. Graduates will:

• Be more comfortable providing all aspects of routine office-based antenatal care;
• Be able to counsel patients regarding prenatal genetic screening and arrange such tests;
• Have gained experience in the management of labour and delivery; induction and augmentation techniques, second stage management, tests of fetal wellbeing (scalp pH), indications for cesarean section and operative vaginal delivery;
• Have gained experience with operative vaginal delivery, especially vacuum assisted delivery and knowledge of forceps delivery (not performance of); and,
• Have gained more experience with repair of 1^st and 2^nd degree obstetrical lacerations, manual removal of the placenta, and perhaps management of shoulder dystocia.

The program has two tracks (Montfort and Ottawa Hospital) and consists of block rotations, typically starting in August (Block 3) or January (Block 8).

Montfort Track

Applicants must be fluently bilingual in English and French.

The Ottawa Hospital Track

2 blocks of Obstetrics at the Civic campus of the Ottawa Hospital
1 block at the Queensway Carleton Hospital
1 block Ambulatory

An optional block in the Newborn Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at either CHEO or the Montfort Hospital is also possible if requested in advance.

Ambulatory Clinics are to be coordinated by the resident with the ObGyn Education Manager.

Through these rotations, you will gain:

• Experience in obstetric antenatal care clinics;

• Experience as obstetric junior resident at the Ottawa Hospital, under supervision of obstetric PGY2 and PGY3 residents; and,

• Experience as resident at community hospital (Queensway-Carleton or Montfort).

Note that this program does not include the performance of cesarean sections, although there will be opportunities to act as first assistant.

During the program you will continue to consolidate your skills in general family medicine through a clinical half day back.

Your time in the program will be evaluated using standardized forms available through the Department of Family Medicine’s one45 system. Field notes allow us to collect direct observation evaluations.  Residents will also meet with the Program Director regularly throughout the residency period. Evaluations will be coordinated by the Family Medicine Education Coordinator.
