Panellist biographies:

Lana Castellucci, MD, FRCPC, MSc

Dr. Lana Castellucci is an Assistant Professor in the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Ottawa, and a Scientist at The Ottawa Hospital Research Institute. She is a member of the ISTH World Thrombosis Day Steering Committee. She sits on the Board of Directors of Thrombosis Canada, a national organization promoting patient education and improved outcomes for patients with venous thrombosis. She is an active member of the CanVECTOR (Canadian Venous Thromboembolism Clinical Trials and Outcomes Research) Network, and she is a recipient of the University of Ottawa Tier 2 Research Chair in Thrombosis and Anticoagulation Safety and the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada National New Investigator Award.

Dr. Castellucci’s clinical and research interests are focused on the prevention, diagnosis and management of anticoagulant-related bleeding in venous and arterial thromboembolism. She is the Principal Investigator of a peer-reviewed international clinical trial (funded by the Canadian Institutes of Health Research) Comparison of Bleeding Risk between Rivaroxaban and Apixaban (COBRRA) in patients with acute venous thromboembolism.

Lisa Duffett, MD, FRCPC

Dr. Duffett is a Hematologist with The Ottawa Hospital with a subspecialty in Thrombosis. Dr. Duffett is an Associate Scientist with the Ottawa Hospital Research Institute and Assistant Professor with the University of Ottawa. Dr. Duffett professional interest is in patient and public engagement in research. Dr. Duffett is a co-lead and creator of the Canadian Venous Thromboembolism Clinical Trials and Outcomes Research (CanVECTOR) Patient Partner Platform. This program includes the recruitment, training and mentoring of patients (and/or caregivers) who collaborate on major clinical trials conducted as part of the research network. Dr. Duffett is an establishing leader in patient engagement and have given invited national presentations, author of an invited review paper and is principal investor (1) and co-investigator (7) on external peer-reviewed grants with inclusion of patient engagement.

Deborah Siegal, MD, MSc, FRCPC

Dr. Deborah Siegal is an Associate Professor of Medicine at the University of Ottawa and Associate Scientist at the Ottawa Hospital Research Institute.

Dr. Siegal graduated from Queen’s University School of Medicine in 2009 and completed Internal Medicine and Hematology training at McMaster University. She holds Master of Science degrees in Pharmacology (University of Toronto) and Health Research Methodology (McMaster University).

Dr. Siegal’s primary research interests include (i) improving patient outcomes after anticoagulant-related bleeding, (ii) management of anticoagulants in patients who have acute bleeding complications or require urgent surgery, (iii) understanding the factors that influence patient and physician decision-making after anticoagulant-related bleeding, and (iv) reducing red blood cell transfusion by minimizing iatrogenic blood loss for laboratory testing.

Dr. Siegal has expertise in the design and conduct of pragmatic cluster randomized trials, individual patient randomized trials, mixed-methods studies, observational studies and meta-analyses. She has received peer-reviewed grant support as principal investigator from the Canadian Institutes of Health Research, the American Society of Hematology, CanVECTOR/Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada, Ontario AFP Innovation Fund, and Hamilton Health Sciences Foundation. She has published over 75 peer-reviewed articles including several in high-impact journals such as The New England Journal of Medicine, Circulation, Blood, and Journal of Thrombosis and Haemostasis.

Philip Stephen Wells, MD, FRCP(C), MSc

Dr. Wells is the Chief/Chair of the Department of Medicine at The Ottawa Hospital and the University of Ottawa. The Department consists of 17 Divisions, almost 500 physicians and over 200 post graduate trainees. He received his medical school education and specialty training in Internal Medicine at the University of Ottawa. He then studied Hematology and completed a Masters in Clinical Epidemiology at McMaster University, concentrating on the special problems of venous thrombosis (blood clots in the veins).  He came on Faculty at UO in 1994 and established the Thrombosis Treatment and Assessment Unit at The Ottawa Hospital, now the largest thrombosis clinical practice and clinical research unit in the world. He is perhaps best known for pioneering the concept of clinical prediction rules to assist in the diagnosis of patients with suspected deep vein thrombosis and/or pulmonary embolism. For each of these diseases he embodied these prediction rules in valuable algorithms now known as the “Wells Model for DVT” and the “Wells Model for PE”. They are currently used world-wide in the diagnostic process for these illnesses and are incorporated into many National and Organizational guidelines. His current interests are in Cancer Associated Thrombosis and in promoting the use of AI to improve or develop clinical predictive analytics. He is currently a University of Ottawa Faculty of Medicine Distinguished Research Chair in Translational and AI Research in Venous Thrombosis.

Dr. Wells has received over 30 million dollars in peer reviewed research funding and has over 365 publications in a wide array of prestigious journals such as the New England Journal of Medicine, JAMA, Circulation, Blood, Nature Genetics and Lancet. His work has been acknowledged through a Canada Research Chair (2001 to 2011), The Ottawa Hospital J. David Grimes Career Achievement Award in 2012, a University of Ottawa Lifetime Achievement Award in 2014, and a University of Ottawa Research Chair in 2019.

Panellist biographies:

Dr. Sylvain Boet MD, PhD

Dr. Boet holds several leadership positions including assistant dean, Francophone affairs at the Faculty of Medicine and funding director of the fellowship in research in perioperative medicine and anesthesiology. Dr. Boet is an associate professor at the University of Ottawa’s Department of Anesthesiology and Pain Medicine. He completed his training in anesthesiology and intensive care in France in 2005, has extensive experience in pre-hospital emergency medicine and holds a PhD in education. Prior to joining the uOttawa team, Dr. Boet completed a simulation and medical education fellowship at the University of Toronto. His research investigates strategies and tools such as debriefing or cognitive aids to improve healthcare practices and patient care. He is particularly interested in interprofessional simulation-based education and crisis resource management as well as bringing education science to the bedside.

Dr. Adam Garber, MD, MSc.(Ed.), FRCSC

Dr. Adam Garber is an assistant professor in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the University of Ottawa and The Ottawa Hospital. His roles for the department of Obstetrics and Gynecology include Simulation Lead, Competence By Design Lead, Simulation Fellowship Program Director, and Associate Postgraduate Program Director. He is a member of the uOSSC simulation fellowship faculty. His academic interests lie in innovative simulation techniques, team training, and patient experience.

Vicki LeBlanc, PhD

Vicki LeBlanc is the Director of the University of Ottawa Skills and Simulation Centre, as well as Chair and Professor of the Department of Innovation in Medical Education at the University of Ottawa. She has over 20 years experience leading research into a) optimizing the use of simulation in health professions education and b) the effects of emotions and stress on the performance of health professionals and front line workers. She has authored over 100 peer-reviewed publications, and regularly presents her work nationally and internationally. In addition to her research program, she works with the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada to advance simulation-based education nationally and internationally, and serves on the editorial boards of the journal Advances in Health Sciences Education and Simulation in Healthcare.

Dr. Mark Walker, MD, FRCSC, MSc, MHCM

Dr. Mark Walker is a healthcare executive and current Chairman and Chief of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the University of Ottawa and The Ottawa Hospital. His work in research has been as an epidemiologist, public health advocate and clinical trialist. He has published more than 300 peer reviewed articles and been awarded more than $15 million as Principal Investigator in research.  As well as being a highly respected clinician and researcher, Dr. Walker has a Masters in Health Care Management from Harvard University.

His leadership roles include the previous Chairman of the Society of Investigators in Obstetrics and Gynecology of Canada, the Chair of the Perinatal Health Committee of the Public Health Agency of Canada, and the Co-Chair of the Maternal Newborn Advisory Committee for the Province of Ontario. He is currently a Senior Scientist and the Scientific Director of the Better Outcomes Registry Network (BORN) and the Interim Director for the International and Global Health Office (IGHO) at the University of Ottawa.

Dr. Walker's main research interests include health services, population health, and clinical studies in perinatology. Dr. Walker is the co-founder of the Obstetrics & Maternal Newborn Investigations (OMNI) Research Group, at the Ottawa Hospital Research Institute (OHRI). OMNI lead research has contributed to understanding of pre-eclampsia, thrombophilia, multi-gestation, treatment of infertility and health services utilization. In 2016, Dr. Walker and Dr. Shi Wu Wen secured funding through a CIHR Foundation Grant totaling $9.7 million over 7 years. Included in the funding from this grant is the FACT 4 Child project along with many other research projects. Dr. Walker is internationally recognized for his research, medical leadership as well as health services and policy work.

Speaker biographies:

Professor Agnes Binagwaho, MD, M(Ped), PhD

Professor Agnes Binagwaho, MD, M(Ped), PHD currently resides in Rwanda and is the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Global Health Equity (UGHE). She is a Rwandan pediatrician who returned to Rwanda in July of 1996, two years after the 1994 Genocide Against the Tutsi. Since then, (1996-2016), she has provided clinical care in the public sector and served the Rwandan Health Sector in high-level government positions, first as the Executive Secretary of Rwanda's National AIDS Control Commission, then as Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Health, and lastly as the Minister of Health for 5 years.

Professor Binagwaho specializes in emergency pediatrics, neonatology, and the treatment of HIV/AIDS. She completed her MD at the Universite Libre de Bruxelles and her MA in Pediatrics at the Universite de Bretagne Occidentale. She was also awarded an Honorary Doctor of Science from Dartmouth College and earned a Doctor of Philosophy from the University of Rwanda College of Medicine.

Professor Binagwaho co-founded the University of Global Health Equity (UGHE), an initiative of Partners In Health, which focuses on changing how health care is delivered around the world by training global health professionals who strive to deliver more equitable, quality health services for all.She currently serves as a Senior Advisor to the Director General of the World Health Organization, and as a member of multiple Advisory Boards and Boards of Directors including the Rockefeller Foundation Board. She is a member of a number of international working groups and task forces in global health for the United Nations and independent organizations, sits on the Editorial Boards of several scientific journals and serves on multiple scientific commissions.

Previously, she co-chaired the Millennium Development Goal Project Task Force on HIV/AIDS and Access to Essential Medicines for the Secretary-General of the United Nations under the leadership of Professor Jeffrey Sachs (MGGs). Professor Binagwaho also co-chaired the Joint Learning Initiative on Children and HIV/AIDS (JLICA) (2006–09) and founded the Rwandan Pediatric Society, chairing it until 2019. Since 2016, she has been a member of the American National Academy of Medicine and since 2017 a Fellow of the African Academy of Sciences. In 2015, Professor Binagwaho received the annual Roux Prize and Ronald McDonald House Charities Award of Excellence. She was also named among the 100 Most Influential African Women for 2020.

Professor Binagwaho is currently a senior Lecturer in the Department of Global Health and Social Medicine at Harvard Medical School, a Professor of Pediatrics at UGHE, as well as an Adjunct Clinical Professor of Pediatrics at Dartmouth’s Geisel School of Medicine. Her academic engagements include research in implementation sciences and human rights to health, health services delivery systems strengthening, HIV/AIDS, and pediatric care. She has published over 210 peer-reviewed articles.

Professor Sanni Yaya, M.Sc., Ph.D., ADM.A., F.CIM., MPM

Professor Yaya is career academic and accomplished researcher. He is Full Professor in the School of International Development and Global Studies at the University of Ottawa and holds the Senghor Research Chair in Health and Development. Prior to assuming the position of Vice-President International and Francophonie, he was Visiting Professor at the University of Oxford. He has also held visiting appointments at Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, and New York University. He is currently Honorary Professorial Fellow at the Imperial College London in the United Kingdom.

Dr. Yaya’s service to the University of Ottawa is significant and extensive. He has a rich and varied experience that spans many aspects of university life. In addition to being a dedicated teacher, he has held positions responsible for student affairs and coordinating academic programs, and has extensive experience elaborating partnerships in the community both at home and abroad.

He first arrived at the University of Ottawa as an Assistant Professor, after holding a Postdoctoral Fellowship at Yale University. Gradually rising through the ranks, Professor Yaya has assumed leadership roles that have helped strengthen our institution. He became Assistant Director and Chair of the Undergraduate programs within the Interdisciplinary School of Health Sciences and served as Acting Director, Associate Dean of the same School. He later joined the Faculty of Social Sciences in the context of the implementation of the health-related sustainable development goals (SDGs) and was appointed as Director and Associate Dean of its School of International Development and Global Studies. Professor Yaya has also chaired the President’s Committee that produced the University of Ottawa’s Internationalization Strategy and is currently the co-chair of the joint APUO-uOttawa committee on Equity, Diversity and Inclusion.

His leadership has been shaped by important priorities: fostering global citizenship and training future leaders so they can develop an awareness of the world as a whole, supporting cutting-edge research and innovation so to address the most pressing and complex societal challenges. Dr. Yaya’s is known as a bridge builder and his work is esteemed by his academic and industry colleagues. He is a distinguished health economist and global health expert known for his influential studies of maternal and child health around the world. His path-breaking work and scholarship has been noted for its careful integration of theory and practice, its attention to important social concerns, and its examination of systems of privilege and discrimination. His research is widely cited and has been disseminated in leading academic journals such as Nature Medicine and The Lancet. He has authored, co-authored and edited 22 books, 50 book chapters and over 200 peer-reviewed papers.

Professor Yaya has been involved with several journals over the last decade. He is co-Editor-in-Chief of Reproductive Health, Associate Editor, Health Economics with BMJ Global Health, and Associate Editor with Globalization and Health to name a few. He is also the Director of the Series on Health and Society at the University of Ottawa Press. His awards and recognitions include the University of Ottawa Award for Excellence in Research, the Faculty of Social Science Excellence in Research Award, the Socrate Excellence in Teaching Award from the Université Laval and was recently appointed as a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada (RSC).

Sanni Yaya holds degrees in Sociology and Anthropology, Management and received his PhD in Economics and Public Policy from the joint doctoral program that brings together the four leading Montreal universities (HEC-Montreal, Concordia, UQAM, and McGill).

Ronald Labonté is Distinguished Research Chair in Globalization and Health Equity and Professor in the School of Public Health and Epidemiology, University of Ottawa. His research is on the health equity impacts of diverse globalization processes, most recently governance of infectious diseases. His most recent books are Health Equity in a Globalizing Era (Oxford University Press, 2019); and Trade Agreements and Public Health (Palgrave MacMillan, 2020). He is Editor-in-Chief of the BMC journal, Globalization and Health, is active with the People’s Health Movement, and has worked extensively with UN agencies, governments and civil society organizations.
