Overview

The Advancements in Global Health Studentship program seeks to bring together the University’s global health community and expand its outreach to international partners, as well as provide opportunities for students, faculty, and communities that face global health challenges. 

The program supports projects that contribute to the advancement of health equity and align with the Global Health Program’s mandate. It will provide funding to MD and graduate students for travel and work related to the projects.

• health law, policy, and ethics 

Eligibility criteria

The applicant must: 

1.  Be registered as a full-time student in the first or second year of the MD program or in a graduate program (i.e., MSc, MPH, PhD, or MD/PhD) in the Faculty of Medicine; and 

2. Have identified a faculty member that has agreed to supervise the project at the time of application 

1. Note: although projects can be faculty-led, the student must be the lead applicant. 

The project must: 

1. Seek to address one of the following areas: 

   • Improve our understanding of or our actions to address health challenges in low- and middle-income country settings;  

   • Focus on transnational issues, determinants or solutions (e.g., climate change, migration, globalization); or  

   • Advance global health education. 

2. Be a total of at least 240 hours of work (equivalent to 6 weeks of full-time work) and occur between June and August; 

   • For projects abroad or in Canada (outside of Ottawa), at least 4 of the 6 weeks (28 days) must be spent on site. 

   • The student and their supervisor(s) can determine the exact schedule. 

3. Be completed between June and August; and 

4. Have ethics approval from a University of Ottawa and/or affiliated hospital Research Ethics Board, if applicable. 

Selected candidates must also fulfill the following: 

• Complete pre-departure training (for international studentships), as directed by the International and Global Health Office (IGHO); and 

• Present their project at a uOttawa research day (poster presentation) or global health conference. 

Selection process

Bursary recipients will be selected by members of the Global Health Advisory Committee in accordance with the following principles:  

• Relevance: The project addresses one or more areas of global health focus outlined in the eligibility criteria above. 
• Impact on students: The project will have a positive impact on participating students, leading to improved knowledge and competence in global health. 
• Scientific merit: The project has a clear objective, is well-designed and uses appropriate methods and approaches. 
• Feasibility: The project can be successfully completed within the allotted timeframe. 
• Equity: The project demonstrates a commitment to ethical global health principles in its design and, if applicable, its engagement with communities and/or partners.  

Note: Preference will be given to students enrolled in and demonstrating participation in the Concentration in Global Health and Social Accountability.

Overview

The Global Health Conference Participation Program provides funding for MD students with a proven interest in global health to attend or present at a conference with a global health focus. 

Funds will be provided once the student has returned from the conference and has provided all post-conference requirements, including copies of expenses up to $500, within two weeks of their return. 

Eligibility criteria

The applicant must: 

1. Be registered as a full-time student of the MD program at the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Ottawa; 

2. Have a proven interest in global health; and 

3. Demonstrate that participation in the conference will contribute to their global health education and build on their experience. 

Selected candidates must also complete the following: 

• A reflective summary (approx. 250 words) of their experience upon their return. 

Selection process

Bursary recipients will be selected by members of the Global Health Advisory Committee based on the relevance of the proposed conference and the availability of funds.  

Note: Preference will be given to students who are presenting their work at the conference and students who are enrolled in the Concentration in Global Health and Social Accountability.

Overview

The Global Health Elective Program (international elective stream) supports students completing international electives in low- or middle-income countries. Global health electives are meant to help students develop a broad understanding of the health of socially marginalized communities across the world.  

Eligibility criteria

For the 2023-24 period, the only international elective that is eligible for this bursary is the community health elective with Kilimanjaro Christian Medical University College in Moshi, Tanzania.

Apply to community health elective (Moshi, Tanzania) 

Overview

The Global Health Elective Program (Canadian elective stream) supports students completing Canadian electives serving marginalized populations in Canada. Global health electives are meant to help students develop a broad understanding of the health of socially marginalized communities across the world.  

Eligibility criteria

The applicant must: 

1. Be registered as a full-time student in the first, second, or fourth year of the MD program at the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Ottawa; 

2. Identify an elective in Canada serving at least one of the following: 

   • Indigenous communities; 

   • Refugee communities; 

   • Other marginalized populations in Canada. (Including racial or ethnic minorities, newcomers, or socioeconomically disadvantaged populations.) 

3. Identify an elective that runs at least four weeks for first- and second-year students and at least two weeks for fourth year students. 

Selected candidates must also complete the following: 

• Pre- and post-elective requirements, as directed by the IGHO. 

Other eligibility criteria:  

• Applicants already receiving scholarship or bursary funding for the elective are not eligible for the Global Health Elective Program bursary.

Apply to Global Health Elective Program (Canadian elective stream) 

This call for applications is open to faculty members with established connections Kilimanjaro Christian Medical University College and Kilimanjaro/Christian Medical Centre (KCMUCo/KCMC) proposing mobility that will take place between October 2023 and April 2024.  

Following the signing of a MOU in November 2021, the uOttawa Faculty of Medicine has established linkages with KCMUCo/KCMC to build collaborative activities in several areas of clinical medicine and public health.  

As we move into the second year of the partnership, the IGHO welcomes faculty mobility applications that build on established linkages and have a clear vision that aligns with the outcomes identified in the partnership logic model.  

In addition to undertaking the mobility initiative, funded faculty members must also commit to present their experience upon their return at a departmental meeting, as well as to be ambassadors for the partnership and champions within their department.  

Criteria 

Second visits must: 

• build on the objectives and the activities undertaken during the initial visit; 

• demonstrate departmental support through a letter of commitment or a financial contribution  

Initial visits must have a: 

• counterpart at KMCUCo/KCMC identified 

• clear vision of objectives while in country 

• plan to continue established collaborations

Overview

The San’yas Indigenous Cultural Safety Training Program is an Indigenous-led, policy-driven, and systems-level educational intervention to foster health equity and mitigate the effects of systemic racism experienced by Indigenous people in health and other sectors. The program offers several online, self-paced modules for individuals working in health care.  

Successful applicants will be reimbursed the $300 fee of the Ontario – Core Health training. 

Eligibility criteria

The applicant must: 

1. Be registered as a full-time student or trainee in the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Ottawa; and 

2. Be registered in the Concentration in Global Health and Social Accountability 

Selection process

Recipients of this funding will be selected by members of the Global Health Advisory Committee.  

Preference will be given to applicants who are actively participating in the Concentration in Global Health and Social Accountability.
