SJTUSM - uOttawa medical program

Launched in October 2014, the SJTUSM-uOttawa Medical Program is the outcome of the long-standing partnership between the University of Ottawa and the Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine (SJTUSM).

The intent of this program is to offer a first-ever North American medical program in China and incorporate an enhanced primary care model into Chinese society, while strengthening student experience and advancing international research collaborations between the partnered universities.

Since 2016, four classes have been admitted to the program, with its first cohort of students graduating in 2020, for which the Faculty of Medicine will award a certificate of participation. Students will continue to travel to Ottawa for the Summer school program and Joint Introduction unit during their 1st year of the program.  As well, up to 5 students are given the opportunity to participate in a Clerkship rotation during their 3rd year in the program.

Tongren Specialists Observership Program (TSOP)

As part of the SJTUSM-uOttawa Medical Program initiative, Tongren Hospital, an affiliated hospital to the Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine (SJTUSM), has received funding toward the realization of a primary care environment in the Changning district of Shanghai. They have also been identified as the primary teaching site for the OSJSM Clerkship Family Medicine (FM) training.

The program started in 2017 and aims to expose Tongren Hospital specialist physicians to the referral and consultation process between Family Medicine and specialist physicians as well as the basic concepts of FM care and teaching model. Tongren Hospital physician observers will become leaders in introducing these concepts at Tongren Hospital and its affiliated Community Health Service Centers (CHSC).

Medical Leadership Training Program (MLTP)

The international Medical Leadership Training Program was launched in 2019 based on a bilateral agreement between the Faculty of Medicine at uOttawa and Université Claude Bernard Lyon (UCBL), France. This training program is meant to enhance the knowledge and skills of clinical professionals in management and health management and allow them to strategically manage an institution, a discipline, a department or a service. The goal is to train physicians in the fundamentals of organizational management. The program, designed specifically for UCBL teachers and delivered by HR professionals and leadership experts at the Faculty of Medicine, focuses on key skills necessary to lead in an ever-changing health care environment.

A first group of 10 international clinical experts from Lyon participated in the program in July 2019. This unique experience allowed them to better understand the North American approach when it comes to leading and also put in light that their challenges are actually very similar to the one their Canadian colleagues experience when it comes to leading and developing people.
