A new agreement between the University of Ottawa Faculty of Medicine and the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada will facilitate and expand collaboration in key priority areas of health research and education.

The agreement, signed on October 24, 2022, acknowledges the parties’ mutual interest in exploring opportunities to collaborate in the following areas:

  • planetary health;

  • international collaborations including education and research;
  • advanced medical leadership training;
  • social accountability, including but not limited to the health of populations and expanding patient-partnered care;
  • health care provider wellness; and
  • evaluation of Continuing Professional Development (CPD) and Competence by Design (CBD) opportunities and outcomes.

“The agreement will allow the Faculty of Medicine to expand our efforts in these sectors in which we are already becoming recognized as leaders, and it offers the key advantage of synergy with the Royal College to advance these initiatives,” says Dr. Bernard Jasmin, dean of the uOttawa Faculty of Medicine.

A governance committee, made up of three representatives from each party, will meet regularly to discuss opportunities to collaborate. Initial steps will include establishing priority collaborations.

“We look forward to exploring collaborative opportunities with the University of Ottawa’s Faculty of Medicine,” says Craig Ceppetelli, executive director of the Royal College’s Office of International Collaboration. “We see tremendous benefits expanding together on these important and timely initiatives, which will ultimately serve our members, health care providers, faculty and staff to help them deliver the best health care for all.”

Under the agreement, which came into effect on November 1, 2022, uOttawa and the Royal College agree to provide faculty and staff expertise and time to develop strategies, implement action plans and measure results. Additionally, both uOttawa and the Royal College commit to reaching out to other faculties of medicine to collaborate on common interests including ongoing projects. Finally, both organizations will report on results to their stakeholders.

The partnership will continue until the end of 2024 with the possibility of extension.
