To be eligible for these courses, you must meet the following requirements:
Undergraduate level:
When applying and during the semester preceding the field research course:
- Must be in good academic standing;
- Must be registered full time (Fall and Winter), in an Honours Bachelor offered by the Faculty of Social Sciences and have the Faculty of Social Sciences as your home faculty;
- Must have completed 54 university credits in their program of study (by May - preceding the date of departure);
- You must submit your application to the courses by completing the online form by the deadline;
- Sign the Code of Conduct and commit to attending the pre-departure trainings;
- Commit to purchase the airline ticket and travel insurance according to the Faculty of Social Sciences criteria;
- Commit to leave with the other participants on the same flight (students must travel together, no exception);
- Be legally able to travel to the Field Research Country;
- Conform to the host country's sanitary measures and the travel advice and advisories from the Canadian government;
- Meet the specific language requirements for the course (written and oral ability in French or English depending on the language of the course);
- If you are registered in the coop program, you must advise them of your interest of participating in the Field Research Course before applying.
Graduate Students:
- Must be registered full-time in an M.A. program at the Faculty of Social Sciences;
- Must inform their department and seek approval from the thesis/MRP supervisor to register for the field research course;
- Must submit your application to the courses by completing the online form by the deadline;
- Sign the Code of Conduct;
- Attend ALL the pre-departure trainings (offered by course professor and uOinternational);
- Conform to the host country's sanitary measures and the travel advice and advisories from the Canadian government;
- Commit to leave with the other participants on the same flight (students must travel together, no exception);
- Purchase the airline ticket and travel insurance according to the Faculty of Social Sciences criteria;
- Must meet the specific language requirements for the course (written and oral ability in French or English depending on the language of the course);
- If you are registered in the co-op program, you must advise them of your interest of participating in the Field Research Course before handing in your admission request.
You must complete the online registration form for the Field Research Course before November 8, 20224. Please read the form carefully before completing it.
You can apply to two Field Research Courses: your first and second choice. If you are only interested in your first choice, you can leave the second choice blank.
When you have submitted your online application, you will receive a confirmation of admission request e-mail. Please keep this e-mail as proof that you applied before the deadline.
The professor of your first choice will be sent the files of all the students that have selected their course as first choice. They will select 15 students out of the applications (10 for the International Summer Schoolcourse) and a wait list. Students who have not been selected for their first choice will then be offered that their application be submitted to the professor of their number two choice IF there remain spots in that course.
Please note there is a maximum of fifteen (15) students per course. Priority is given to students who have not completed a field research course in previous years. If this course represents additional units (does not count for optional nor elective requirements, the student is ineligible for the course.
If you are accepted for the course, you will receive an e-mail in December advising you of the next steps to take. You will need to confirm your participation in the course by e-mail.
In addition to your course registration form, you will have to prepare certain documents before your departure (see Important Dates section below).
Undergraduate Students:
If selected, the faculty will register you to one of the following six credits course codes:
- FSS 3210 (if you have completed 54 credits in your program of study by April)
- FSS 4210 (if you have completed 81 credits in your program of study by April)
The Coordinator will inform you of the application of these credits in your program of study,according to your academic progress (optional or elective course.
Registration will take place by email with [email protected]. We will contact you when it is time to register.Summer course registration is in April.
Undergraduate students will not be able to participate in the June convocation because they must maintain their registration throughout the summer semester. If you have completed all your requirements, you will then graduate in October. If that is your situation, contact the Finance Services early on to make arrangements.
Please note that if you have unpaid late tuition fees listed in your student account, we will not be able to register you. If you are not registered, you cannot participate in the course. You will then be financially responsible for any costs resulting from this situation. Contact the Finance Services early on to ensure there are no outstanding holds on your file.
Graduate Students:
If selected, your unit will register you for a three credits course.
The course will count during the summer semester. Graduate students will not be able to participate in the June convocation because they must maintain their registration throughout the summer semester (even if the course count as additional credits in your program of study). If you have completed all your requirements, you will then graduate in October. If that is your situation, contact the Finance Services early on to make arrangements.
Please note that if you have unpaid late tuition fees listed in your student account, we will not be able to register you. If you are not registered, you cannot leave to participate in the course. You will then be financially responsible for any costs resulting from this situation. Contact the Finance Services to ensure there are no outstanding holds on your file.
Travel
Purchase of the airline tickets and travel insurance is mandatory through the faculty travel agent, regardless of existing travel insurance coverage. No other travel insurance will be accepted.
All students must be on the same departure flight. However, you may extend your stay and select your own return date.
Accommodations
Accommodations vary based on your host country. The course professor will confirm the specific accommodations during the pre-departure training meetings.
Depending on the course, the course fee includes accommodations, certain meals, transportation, educational excursions, etc. Some courses require a course fee to be paid in advance, while others are paid in-country. For courses that requirement advance payment, please see the payment deadlines indicated in your selection email. Some prices are subject to change due to exchange rates, please refer to your email for the final costs.
Refunds: Refunds for course fees are not available after payment.
The airline ticket and travel insurance must be purchased through the faculty’s travel agency. Costs may vary based on the date of purchase, the length of your stay, your personal itinerary, etc. Any changes to the airline ticket once purchased (including cancellation) will be at the student's own expense.

Tuition Fees
Tuition fees are separate from the costs listed below. These fees vary according to your registration status (full-time vs. part-time) and your program. For more information on tuition fees, please consult the Office of the Registrar.
Vaccines
Vaccines costs are the responsibility of the student. Some are mandatory to enter the host country. All students are advised to consult a travel clinic and your family doctor for recommendations. Also consult the Travel.gc.ca websitenorth_eastexternal link to find out the Canadian Government recommendations according to your host country for more information. Students must adhere to sanitary measures in the host country.

BRAZIL - English course open to undergraduate students - May 13 to June 3, 2024
Bursary: $1250(deposited in student account after course completion)
Payment required prior to departure:
- Course fee: $2,956 (includes food, educational excursions, and local transportation)
- Airline ticket and travel insurance: $2,205
Additional fees:
- Tuition fees (according to University deadlines)
- Recommended to have up-to-date tetanus and hepatitis vaccines, please consult your travel health provider
- Recommended personal budget: $400 (to cover extra evening meals, weekends and personal purchases)
- In addition, Brazil is bringing back a visa requirement. It was supposed to start in October but was pushed to January. Please allow between $55-75 dollars for an e-visa, obtained online through Brazilian government and valid for multiple entries for two years. International students are also likely to need a visa. Please note that we are currently waiting for updates from the Brazilian government.
FRANCE – French course open to undergraduate students - May 24 to June 14, 2024

- Tuition fees (according to University deadlines)

Note for accommodations: Ehwa University covers the housing fees along with certain meals and the program (excluding educational excursions).
You are responsible for securing your passport and/or visa. You must have a valid passport before leaving the country as well as a visa for the country you are visiting, if necessary. Please begin the process of obtaining these documents once you are accepted into the course. Be sure to leave enough time to receive your passport and/or visa. If you plan to travel after the Field Research Course, you must make sure to have the appropriate travel documents. Please consult the links below and contact the appropriate authorities of the host country.
Nationals from other countries are responsible to undertake the appropriate steps to find out what are the requirements and fees, according to their status, for travel documents in the host country.
All selected students will automatically receive the following bursaries:
Morocco: $250 from the Faculty of Social Sciences, and $250 from the International Office
France: $250 from the Faculty of Social Sciences and $250 from the International Office
Brazil: $1000 from the Faculty of Social Sciences and $250 from the International Office
Mexico: $500 from the Faculty of Social Sciences and $500 from the International Office
Senegal: $500 from the Faculty of Social Sciences and $250 from the International Office
South Korea: $250 from the Faculty of Social Sciences and $250 from the International Office
These amounts will be deposited in your student account after the course.
