Canada 150 Research Chairs

The Canada 150 Research Chairs Program was established in 2017 to enhance Canada’s reputation as a global centre for science, research and innovation excellence, in celebration of Canada’s 150th anniversary.

About the program

In 2017, the Canada 150 Research Chairs Program provided Canadian institutions with a one-time investment to attract top-tier, internationally based scholars and researchers to Canada. The non-renewable chairs are tenable for seven years at two values: $350,000 per year and $1 million per year.

Governance

The program is a tri-agency initiative of the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC), the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council and the Canadian Institutes of Health Research. It is administered by the Tri-agency Institutional Programs Secretariat (TIPS), which is housed within SSHRC. The TIPS is responsible for the day-to-day administration of the program. It reports to the Management Committee, which itself reports to the Steering Committee. The Steering Committee reports to the minister of Science.
