University of Ottawa/Institut du Savoir Montfort Joint Chair on the Health of Francophones in Ontario

Established in 2019, the Chair on the Health of Francophones in Ontario aims to consolidate knowledge about the living conditions of Francophones in minority settings, their health status, their experiences with language barriers and services, and the organizational capacity to offer services in French.

Research program

The research program helps better identify socio-territorial inequalities in health; determine service needs; identify vulnerable sub-groups; estimate and improve health-care systems’ capacity to meet the needs of these populations; document the impact of language barriers on safety and quality of care; and support the training of a new generation of researchers studying the health of Francophones in minority settings.

Les populations aînées francophones en situation minoritaire : conditions de vie, état de santé et expérience de soins en contexte linguistique minoritaire  [Francophone seniors in minority settings: living conditions, health status and experience of care in minority language settings] - CIHR Project Grant 2022–2024. Amount: $363,376 This research project aims to identify the living conditions of Francophone seniors aged 65 and over who live in minority language settings in Ontario, their health status, and their experiences with care and language barriers in institutional and home-based long-term care.

Effet de la langue utilisée lors de l’évaluation cognitive auprès de francophones en situation minoritaire présentant divers niveaux de bilinguisme: vers l’élaboration de lignes directrices pour le dépistage sécuritaire des troubles cognitifs à l’aide du Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA) [Effect of the language used in cognitive assessments of Francophones in minority settings with various levels of bilingualism: toward developing guidelines for safe screening of cognitive disorders using the Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA)] - Jacinthe Savard (PI). CIHR Catalyst Grant: Official-Language Minority Communities in Health Research 2022–2023. Amount: $90,989 This project aims to identify the effect of the language used when administering the MoCA to Francophones presenting various levels of bilingualism.

Creation of a knowledge mobilization site on health and services offered in a minority official language (In French)Project funded by the Chair. The objectives of this site are: 1) to provide a one-stop shop for social and health information; 2) to provide an organized knowledge base; 3) to make best use of relevant data; 4) to facilitate knowledge transfer.

Évaluation de la mise en œuvre de services en français en contexte minoritaire : élaboration d’un questionnaire aux usagers [Evaluation of the implementation of services in French in a minority setting: development of a user questionnaire]. Jacinthe Savard (CI). CNFS-Volet Université d’Ottawa grant Amount: $39,221; in 2021–2022: $15,013. This project aims to create a questionnaire that assesses the user’s experience and measures their satisfaction with the active offer of service in the official languages. This includes, for example, use of the patient’s preferred language, signage in both official languages, and the provision of interpretation services.

Soutenir l’offre active et l’intégration des services sociaux et de santé, destinés aux aînés des communautés linguistiques officielles en situation minoritaire [Supporting the active offer and integration of social and health services for seniors in official-language minority communities]. Jacinthe Savard (CPI). SSHRC grant. Amount: $199,997. This project led to a partnership whose objective is to support the managers of these services in more efficiently integrating official-language minority services by providing reflection and decision-making tools for the development of action plans. The final phase consists of evaluating the implementation of these actions.

Impact de la pandémie de la COVID-19 sur les proches aidants et aidantes de langue officielle minoritaire [Impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on family and friend caregivers in official language minority settings]. Amount: $39,950 The purpose of this research is to examine the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on family and friend caregivers of seniors living at home and on the caregiver-care receiver relationship.
