The University of Ottawa, the Human Rights Research and Education Centre (HRREC) and the Scholars at Risk (SAR) uOttawa Committee are delighted to welcome two new Visiting Researchers!

Shabnam Salehi started her academic journey in 2012 when she became an assistant professor at Kabul University. She served as a senior researcher in several local research institutions and thinks tanks on issues related to women's rights and gender-based policy reforms. Shabnam also worked as a Commissioner and Head of the Women’s rights Promotion and Protection Unit (WPU) in the Afghanistan Independent Human Rights Commission (AIHRC) from 2019 until 2021. Since 2021, Shabnam is continuing her advocacy work for women's rights in Afghanistan from abroad by supporting monitoring and evaluating efforts. She is being hosted by the Graduate School of Public and International Affairs (GSPIA).

Faisal Al-Kamali joined the Electrical Engineering Department, at the University of Ibb, Ibb, Yemen in 2011 as an Assistant Professor and became Associate Professor in 2017. He worked as a head of the Electrical Engineering Department in the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Ibb from 2013-2014 and as a Vice Dean of the Academic Affairs of the Faculty of Engineering at the University of Ibb from 2018-2020. He is coauthor of one book and more than 40 articles. His research interests are in physical layer technologies for wireless communication systems such as interference cancellation, channel equalization and channel estimation, image transmission over wireless communication systems, etc. Faisal is currently working in the School of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science in the Faculty of Engineering.

The University of Ottawa joined the Scholars at Risk (SAR) Network in 2014 and entrusted the Human Rights Research and Education Centre (HRREC) to develop a SAR uOttawa Program. HRREC Assistant Director, Viviana Fernandez, is the chair of the SAR Canada Section's Steering Committee and has represents the Canadian section in the SAR International Advisory Committee since 2016.
