If you are external to uOttawa, login credentials to complete the on-line training sessions can be obtained by creating an external user profile.

Proof of completion of the following is mandatory for all facility users before access to the facilities will be provided.

• Orientation and Access Form: All users must fill out an Orientation and Access Form as well as provide a $20.00 refundable cash deposit in order to obtain an access card for lab access. A copy of the form is available here.
  
  If you are internal to uOttawa and already already have an access card, please let us know so that we can request a copy of your form from the relevant uOttawa department.
• Registration Form: Please complete our online registration form. If more information is required, our lab technologists will communicate with you directly using the contact information provided on your form.
• Online Training:
  • Lab Safety Training: Lab Safety Training is now an on-line training session. It is recommended that users register for this training as soon as possible.
  • Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS): Select WHMIS - for laboratory workers, then complete the modules and on-line quiz.
  • Worker Health and Safety Awareness: Complete the modules and on-line quiz
  • Respect in the Work Place
  • Violence Prevention
• NanoFab Lab Protocols and Safety Manual(PDF version, 1,476 KB): Please read the manual and complete the requirements therein.
• NanoFab Facility Tour: Once the above mandatory requirements have been met, a tour of the NanoFab facilities will be scheduled at a mutually convenient time to go over Health, Safety & Risk Management procedures.

Once all of the above mandatory requirements have been met, specific tool training will be provided by our highly qualified lab technologists at uOttawa and must be completed prior to using our facilities. Training must be completed to the satisfaction of our lab technologists before a user can proceed with using a tool without supervision. 

While each tool’s training requirements are unique, with some taking months to master, they all involve one-on-one sessions with staff members until you are authorized to use the tool independently.

We propose to train users as required, as equipment needs will be assessed on a project-basis. The fees associated with training have already been included in your membership fees.

Tool training is meant for those who have a specific research project to be carried out over an extended period of time. As such, the following restrictions for tool training apply:

• Undergraduate Students: There will be no training provided for the following tools:
  • Beam tools: GeminiSEM 500, Raith Pioneer SEM + EBeam, Orion NanoFab, Angstrom Nexdep Evaporator
  • AFM’s: Bruker, Park NX10
     
• M.Eng. Students and Visiting Researchers: Tool training for users within these categories will not be granted, except for exceptional circumstances as adjudicated by the NanoFab Director
   
• Ph.D. students, M.Sc. students and Postdoctoral Fellows: Tool training will be granted as requested

• Unlimited access to all labs and tools (with the exception of the Zeiss ORION NanoFab HIM/FIB) for up to three personnel for 12 months
• Includes up to 1,000 nm of precious metal deposition ($1.50/nm for additional use)
• Includes technologist time for training users

Please note: Equipment malfunctions are an unfortunate reality of laboratory environments. Although NanoFAb staff members do their best to ensure equipment is fully operational, there may be circumstances that arise that are beyond our control. NanoFab will not cover costs incurred for lost time due to tool malfunctions, but are open to discussing membership extensions if a required tool is down for an extended period.
