The Rhodes Scholarship is the oldest (first awarded in 1903) and one of the most prestigious international scholarship programs, enabling outstanding young people from around the world to study at the University of Oxford.

The Rhodes Scholarship is the oldest (first awarded in 1903) and one of the most prestigious international scholarship program, enabling outstanding young people from around the world to study at the University of Oxford. For more than a century, the Rhodes Trust has funded scholarships for exceptional students to study at the University of Oxford.

Rhodes Scholarships are for young leaders of outstanding intellect and character who are motivated to engage with global challenges, committed to the service of others and show promise of becoming value-driven, principled leaders for the world’s future.

Eligibility Criteria

a. Nationality/citizenship: You must be a citizen or permanent resident of Canada. Applications from refugees/asylum seekers currently residing in Canada will also be considered in this constituency. (Students who are attending a Canadian university on a student visa are not eligible to apply).

b. Education/residency: You must be domiciled in Canada

c. Age: Upon October 1, 2023, you must meet either of the criteria below:

i. You must be at least 18 and have not reached your 24th birthday (i.e. you must have been born after October 1, 1999 and on or before October 1, 2005).

OR (for older candidates who completed their first undergraduate degree later than usual)

ii. You must have not reached your 27th birthday (i.e. have been born after October 1, 1996) AND your first undergraduate degree must have been (or will be) awarded on or after October 1, 2022.

d. Academic achievement: You must have completed (or will have completed by June/July 2024) an undergraduate degree from a college or university (normally a bachelor’s degree) to a sufficiently high standard to be admitted to postgraduate study at the University of Oxford. In this respect, please note carefully the requirements for your chosen course at Oxford.

Candidates will have a higher chance of successful admission to Oxford if they have:

  • A First Class Honours Degree or equivalent, or,
  • A GPA of 3.70/4.0 or higher

Value

The Rhodes scholarship covers tuition and provides an annual stipend covering living expenses for study at the University of Oxford.

July 17, 2023

Deadline for application for endorsement by the University of Ottawa and to submit a copy of the main documents of their application file by e-mail at [email protected]. The Rhodes online application system will require an authorization code, which can be obtained by sending an e-mail to [email protected].

July 24 to August 4, 2023

Review and selection of the recommended applications by the University of Ottawa Rhodes Scholarships Committee, which mostly consists of professors who are former Rhodes Scholars.

August-September, 2023

The selected candidates prepare their application.

September 28, 2023, at 23:59 Pacific Time

Online application system closing date. All application documents from applicants must have been submitted online in the Rhodes portal by this date.

Early October, 2023

The Office of the Vice Provost, Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies uploads the President's letters in the web portal.

October, 2023

Mock interviews with selected scholarship candidates.

November, 2023

Regional Rhodes Selection Committee interviews.

Important notice: Late and/or incomplete applications will not be submitted to the Office of the President for a letter of nomination.

Note: Considering the limited number of Rhodes scholarships available in Canada and the required academic standing to be admitted into Oxford, only applications that are deemed to have a reasonable chance of being selected by the Rhodes Regional Selection Committees will be recommended, and the maximum number of recommended applications for the University of Ottawa will be limited to 2.
