Students at a welcome week event.

Sponsored students

The Sponsored Student Program is a centralized service offered by uOInternational to facilitate communication between sponsors, sponsored students, and the University’s academic units and departments.

Sponsored Students Program

We have significant experience working with sponsor agencies, having welcomed students funded by more than 30 sponsoring agencies worldwide. We are here to ensure that sponsored students’ studies at the University of Ottawa are successful.

Who are sponsored students?

Sponsored students are funded for their studies by their government or a third-party organization. This financial support usually includes tuition, incidental fees, health insurance and living expenses.
The Sponsored Student Program does not provide funding to students. Our office provides support to students who have either already obtained or will be seeking third-party sponsorship funding to attend uOttawa.

Admission information

Admission requirements

Students wishing to study at uOttawa must follow the normal admission process for international students. The application for sponsorship is done separately. Each sponsor has its own application process. Please contact the Sponsored Students Program if there are questions on the distinction between sponsorship and admission application processes.

Please refer to undergraduate studies admission and graduate and postdoctoral studies admission for information on the admission process for undergraduate and graduate studies.

Language requirements

Some students may be required to take language courses if their offers of admission are conditioned by completion of those courses. The Official Languages and Bilingualism Institute (OLBI) offers an English Intensive Program and a French Intensive Program that will help students achieve the required level of language proficiency to begin their program of study.

Sponsorship information

When students have their fees paid by their government or organization outside the University of Ottawa, they should notify the university at least one month before classes start. Sponsors must fill out the billing authorization form or provide a sponsorship letter so that the University of Ottawa can bill them directly for the appropriate fees. This will allow the University to properly bill the sponsor directly and avoid delays.

The billing authorization form or sponsorship letter can be sent by email to [email protected], by fax to 613-562-5988 or by regular mail to the following address:

University of Ottawa
Student Accounts, Financial Resources
550 Cumberland Street, Room 021
Ottawa ON K1N 6N5

Invoices are sent directly to the sponsor indicated on the billing authorization form.

When the terms of the sponsorship expires, the student is responsible for discussing the renewal of the agreement with his or her sponsor, if applicable.

Note: Should a sponsor require information or documentation regarding a student, we can provide requested documents upon receipt of the third-party release form (PDF, 613KB) signed by the student.
